Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

How I work

We all have patterns we can see. The relationship we keep choosing. The argument that somehow always ends in the same place. The tendency to withdraw, please, control, pursue, perform or disappear when something feels at stake.

More difficult, and more interesting, are the patterns we cannot see.

We don’t simply respond to the world as it is. We meet it through everything we have already learned about love, safety, intimacy, rejection, power and belonging. Without realising it, we anticipate certain responses from other people, protect ourselves against things that haven’t yet happened, and sometimes draw others into playing remarkably familiar parts.

From inside the pattern, it rarely feels like a pattern. It simply feels like: 'This is what happened'. 'This is what they are like'. 'This is how I am'. This is where psychodynamic psychotherapy becomes interesting. Rather than only asking how to change what you think or do, we become curious about the world you are living inside: what you expect, what you fear, what you cannot quite see, and what gets created between you and other people. And inevitably, some of this begins to appear between us too.

What emerges in the consulting room is not incidental. It is the material.

The point is not to become endlessly self-analytical. It is to have more choice. When something that has quietly organised your life becomes visible, it no longer has quite the same freedom to organise it for you.

I work with both individuals and couples in ongoing psychotherapy, meeting weekly or fortnightly, either in person in Devon Bristol or London or online. Some people come because something particular has happened; others because they have become aware of a pattern, feeling or way of relating that they no longer want to keep living inside.

I take the responsibility and privacy of this work deeply seriously. I am fully accredited and insured, registered with the ICO for data protection, and my clinical work is held within regular supervision and my own ongoing personal therapy.

I have particular experience working with professionals, public figures, international clients and people whose lives take them between places, for whom privacy, discretion and continuity of care can be especially important. Confidentiality is not something I treat as procedural; it is fundamental to the work.

Individuals

Weekly or fortnightly psychotherapy
Online or in-person
50 minutes    (£125)

People come to me for many reasons: depression, anxiety, exhaustion, difficulty in relationships, infertility or loss, a change in identity or direction, or simply the sense that something is wrong which cannot yet be named.

I bring particular depth to infertility and IVF; relationship, loss and identity; and profound experiences of consciousness, whether arising through psychedelic experiences, meditation, dreams, illness, grief or other significant life events.

Couples

Weekly or fortnightly psychotherapy, online or in-person
50 minutes    (£150)

Couples often come when the argument has learnt to repeat itself, when a silence has moved in, or if there are differing feelings about intimacy. I work with the relationship itself, as its own living thing, holding a third position: not referee, not judge.

Some couples come to repair, some to decide, and some to find a way to part well. All are good reasons to be here. It is also common for one person to want the work more than the other; that too is workable, and is honest material in itself.
